Some new South African JHardy Succulents

#1

Post by SC FM »

I ordered several new hardy SA succulents from High Country Gardens. I am going to plant them in ground in a few days.I hope to replicate the natural habitat as such as possible by adding lots of granite grit and plant in the shade on the east side of rocks etc. Anyway it will be a fun experiment, successful I hope. I have a few species of Delosperma, one Echeveria, Pachyveria, Sedeveria, Sempervivums and Anacampseros rufescens already growing successfully. Here are the pictures I took. Anyone growing these Hardy succulents. I live in a zone 7b/8a and it is very wet, but as I said I have had luck so far with other succulents.

Looks like a great bunch of stuff! I wish I could grow things like that here, but they can't take the summer heat...all our zones have their advantages, don't they?

Yes I think so. I have lost a few Delosperma due to scalding. If we get a heavy thunder shower followed quickly by bright sunshine on a hot day, particularly if it is evening sun, then they can scald here as well. I hope to plant these out of heavy afternoon sun. What do you think?

I have boiled just about every Aizoaceae I have ever tried, so I think I'm unqualified to offer much!

I came real close to trying Ruschia pulvinaris toward the end of last summer. I had been eyeing two pots of it at a BB for several weeks, but I didn't buy 'em because my research concluded that they would not last long in our heat. But then I thought, "Oh, what the heck. It's a cheap experiment. Give 'em a try!" The next time I visited the BB they were gone. Haven't seen 'em since.

Melt in the Sun, melting down Ice Plants is whow you came to chose the name for the board, LOL.
toditd, I have made the mistake of not getting rare plants when I saw them , only to go back later to buy them and them be gone. As they say,'Make hay while the sun shines'

Stomacium mustilinum should be Stomatium mustellinum and Aloinospis is Aloinopsis.

"I should have bought" happens to me after every visit. I saw some sedum at HD a few weeks ago,it was tiny foliage and very soft to the touch. I thought "Only going to dry out one day and die"...but changed my mind 3 days later went back to HD..gone. My last 3 visits to HD..not another.
My Cordyline topic? 2 years ago I saw at HD a Cordy in pure black leaves- not almost black, but real black and in flower. Never seen another since.
Why? :frown:

That’s a nice selection there of Succulents to try out. I mainly have ghost plants but have others I need to plant out eventually. I was looking on there site but also saw a lot of bad comments in the past year.. so kept me from buying anything. How many times have you ordered from them and have you always gotten healthy plants?

I saw a nice Aloinopsis at HD as I perused the crested Myrtlocactus. I should stop by. I know they have beautiful flowers.
