How to save photos by the thousands?

I wonder if you could link me to a how to? My hard drive is going i think. Can it even be done with USB? Or quick buy a budget PC since my needs are basic?

My first option would be procurement of a removable hard drive. There are many fine and inexpensive examples out there, of which this is one: Toshiba Canvio Basics 2TB Portable External Hard Drive

Yes, that is the quickest in your control solution - just get an external hard drive and back up your files/system.

If by chance you are on amazon prime or have a family member on amazon prime who is willing to help out. Amazon will let prime members store all their photos in their cloud as part of the prime membership - I have not tested if it has limits beyond which you have to pay for extra storage space - there could be it is amazon all after all and of course you put them in amazon's cloud with all the risks of abuse that come with that. However, it provides a certain ease of use and access.

I'm not sure I see how copying tons of files onto some anonymous hard drive who knows where is a better option than maintaining proper backups in house. Especially given how ridiculously inexpensive storage space has become. If it's one or the other I'll take in-house every time, tho I suppose both would be better yet. I have a desktop PC here with five internal hard drives and I have 3 removable drives. My removable drives alone have a capacity of 8 tb, and could easily be far more if needed.

@Stan I do both, like Gee said (as well as save memory cards once they are full and just buy a new one since they are so cheap now). I've had good luck with the Toshiba external hard drives. I'd back it up to an external hard drive first to get them all secure, and then worry about cloud storage.

Also, do you have Amazon Prime? If so, you get free unlimited photo storage (not unlimited video storage, though - only a tiny bit there). You just have to search "Amazon Photos" and get started. You can drag and drop all your photos to it and then access them anytime you want.

If you want video backups, you can upload free to youtube and just keep them "private" or "unlisted," but it is kind of annoying to search through later. It isn't really designed to be used that way, but it can be, especially if you don't have a ton of videos. Once you get too many, it is just a pain to find them.

Sorry, when I saw your post my exhausted brain asked me: does he mean that as a suggestion or is he asking what cloud storage is. My exhausted brain then did not proceed to the most logical conclusion that it was a suggestion as you must surely know what cloud storage is... so hence my post.

Thanks all. The H drive died on me. I'm using a PC my son in law built..its raw and its going to take a non expert like me a while to get back to all the forums. He thinks though he can save all my photo files. Someday transfer to this one. I'm far from PC expertise. Email, forums and YouTube-lol..I can do that.

I sympathise, Stan, as I also had a pc meltdown just after Christmas and, although my files and pics were OK, I lost all my email correspondence and contacts.

I've sent a message to Kev Spence. Sad to report that David is extremely poorly at the moment.

btw,omg the hassle of formatting a new pc and all the redone passwords. What a headache.

Suddenly today I was logged out of most of my sites and worse the passwords are ignored. My browser is set to remember passwords. What do you think is going on? A-ville has stayed true.
btw,the son in law was able to save all my photos-whew.
Update- back in with new passwords some the same as the old ones. Must have been a glitch. This pc is much faster than my old one..I can see 1440k on this one..maybe 4k if i had a 4k monitor.
