growing outdoors successfully for many years in the Huntington. A good 10a plant, perhaps even 9b?

The Huntington plants look a lot more cylindrical than the other two.

I am under the impression the species has either recently been or is about to be split.

The HBG example upon closer inspection does feature a significant channel, which because of the mature form with much longer leaves, and from a distance, does somewhat resemble a cylindrical form (but not really closer up), mainly due to the proportion of leaf length to width... significantly different in a mature specimen compared to juvenile. In The Splendid Sansevieria book, Juan Chahinian states: "The line of division of this group (ehrenbergii) with that of S. robusta is not clear." implying they are rather similar.

This species is yet another example whereby the juvenile form has a quite different "flavor" from the mature form.

At the very bottom of this page, there's a side by side photo of S. ehrenbergii and S. robusta. There are mature photos of S. ehrenbergii as well. They show what you're describing about the change in leaf appearance over time. http://sanseverix.com/ehrenbergii.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The bottom photo does look quite a bit like my plant. That's about the only ehrenbergii photo I've seen that does.

So this guy has turned out to be somewhat sun-sensitive. one small leaf developed a burn spot, though it isn't ghastly looking like burn on thin-leafed Sans. And other older leaves are staring to yellow, so I pulled it out of the sun completely for now.

Sansevieria ehrenbergii 'Dark Blue' - I think the 'Dark Blue' name it came with might be questionable, but that's how it was bought ...

This is without a doubt, my happiest, healthiest Sans. A little leggy perhaps, but deliriously happy. Just growing in a window, about 30" tall and across. The offset in front is quite new. Not sure the window will be large enough to contain it.
