Cacti on social media

#1

Post by nsp88 »

I am going to try to keep cactus stuff I find on social media on this instead of on the "agaves on social media" post to keep it neat.

Any reports on cold/wet tolerances of this? And is the ID correct? Looks a little different than Google image results.

Has anyone ever tried this? How was it?

The Echinocactus are wonderful. Unsurprisingly very difficult to grow well here.

Especially horizonthalonius hates humidity... i would not say hates water but it is not that far off...

I’d love to give one a try but they’re very expensive grown from seed and anything of decent size is invariably poached. I can’t justify spending so much on a cactus that will likely turn to mush. I have been proven wrong before though, my Ferocactus hamatacanthus had no trouble with heavy snow and cold temps here. Those west Texas cactus are a tough crowd.

Just saw another stunner. Google is saying it can't handle the winters here, though. Beautiful blooms.

That's one way to catch people's eye at a sale. The longhorn is my favorite.

I don't know how I missed this comment when you posted it, but I just searched the forum for this plant and saw your comment. Walmart had a 3-in-1 pot of these on clearance for a few bucks and a quick Google search said it could handle the cold, so I couldn't resist. Glad to know it can handle snow and all.

It did very well. Hasn’t been a fast grower but if it likes the spot it’s in I’ll keep it there.

Nice! I'm sure it can probably handle it, but I'm going to wait until it cools down just a bit before I separate these three and put them in more permanent spots.

Looks quite a bit like a cottonwood (populus fremontii) but there’s a few trees that this resembles. I have seen quite a few cactus growing off ground level in the Desert Botanic Garden. I suppose it isn’t much different than a cliff.

I've heard that most Christmas cactus in circulation nowadays aren't Christmas cactus and are actually Thanksgiving cactus. I bet this one is. And I've never seen one with corking. Pretty cool.

Haha, I guess this is one of those "so preoccupied with whether or not you could, but didn't stop to think if you should" type things.
