A streak of cold mornings (5-8C / 41-46F) and sunny and for our latitude warm days (up to 20C / 68F) make some lilies push new leaves.

The flowers are lovely! Mine bloomed all summer long when given a little water. Curious to see how it’ll handle a Utah winter.

Re: Post pictures from your yard today
A shot of northwestern weather is coming in this week which should bring our first frost and finish off the growing season here.
Went out and took some pictures of the garden to see how much they grew this season. ‘Mister Ripple’ went from an overgrown pot:
To the biggest Agave in my beds in one season. It seemed to love our hot and dry summer. I think it’s close to 4 feet across now.
The eBay noid grew well but was oddly thirsty. Now that it’s filled in a little more does anyone want to guess on parentage? The seller claimed it might’ve been parryi x americana or applanata x americana. Smooth leaves and no real banding. It got possibly the best spot on my park strip so I’ll be a little unhappy if it melts in the first frost. It has never pupped which is very odd and a little disappointing. Americana x parryi would’ve produced about a hundred pups by now I’d think.

There seems to be variation in what is sold as Mr. Ripple, but they all fit the profile. Yours looks great.Gafoto wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 2:45 pm A shot of northwestern weather is coming in this week which should bring our first frost and finish off the growing season here.

I have to wonder how much of that variation is actually just growing conditions. Here are two pups in a row of the above plant that were growing in slightly different conditions only a few feet apart this summer: I imagine the color and leaf shape will converge quickly now that they’re side by side.Meangreen94z wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 7:58 pmThere seems to be variation in what is sold as Mr. Ripple, but they all fit the profile. The one in your yard looks closer to ‘Crazy Horse’. Spination used to post pictures of a similar Agave he said was labeled ‘Mr. Ripple’
This is one posted by Xanthoria and similar to what I’ve seen planted in Houston.

Re: Post pictures from your yard today
Trying to distract myself from nonstop-refreshing a certain results page, so I'll post some stuff here
My first ever echeveria (almost) bloom. They are some of my favorite blooms. The first Delosperma I haven't immediately killed. My first ripe chiltepin. I'm trying to hybridize Turks cap and Texas rock rose. Hopefully next year I'll have a hybrid. I think these are livingstone daisy seedlings. Anyone grow these? Any tips? this was just an impulse purchase at a store a while back. Loving my new oxalis I got at a swap recently. I did a little test to see how much pad you needed to grow roots. Some cactus seedlings and a semp seedling. Are these Puya? I planted Puya a while back in one of these trays with no luck, and then moved things around and reseeded empty tray spots. Nothing ever took and I never reseeded it again, and then after a while these popped up. I've barely kept them alive most of the year and then just recently they've started making a (very small) comeback. I'm hoping for Puya.

Now that you mention it, it does look a bit like ‘Crazy Horse’. I have a supposed ‘Crazy Horse’: Another sketchy eBay find. Never noticed that they look suspiciously similar. I guess I better look for a more authentic ‘Mr. Ripple’. ‘Mr. Ripple’ does seem a bit more blue-gray as opposed to ‘Crazy Horse’ which is more of a green-gray. I think ‘Mr Ripple’ is supposedly hardier too, which would be good for my garden.Meangreen94z wrote: ↑Tue Nov 05, 2024 5:26 pm The one in your yard looks closer to ‘Crazy Horse’. looks great! Is this Roger's Agave filifera? I have a couple still small from him and they seem to take more cold than expected.

Re: Post pictures from your yard today
I actually found those at a local nursery. The first did well last winter, so I picked up a second while they still had them.
I do miss the opportunity of stopping by Quality Cactus while in South Texas. Maybe it’s the recent run of cold winters but that type of wholesale nursery seems to be disappearing. If I want that type of specimen plants it’s either Cactus King in Houston, which is overpriced, or Tillery Street Plant Company, which is where I found the Agave filifera.

I don’t know how that polyphylla doesn’t rot. Agave utahensis is another tricky one for me. You have very unique conditions in your yard.mickthecactus wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 5:53 am Aloe polyphylla

Re: Post pictures from your yard today
Because I’m in the UK conditions are cooler which is more to the liking of polyphylla. Indeed, the biggest I’ve ever seen was growing in New Zealand.

It’s the heat that’s a problem for polyphylla, right? I’ve seen some great specimens in the San Francisco area which can get plenty of moisture at times.

Re: Post pictures from your yard today
That's a beautiful setup and I always get inspiration from this. Is there enough space for you to walk inside this garden without tangling with the plants?
And what are the four Dasylirion / Yucca like plants in the center?
Thanks
