Wanted Agave Blue Glow Pups. Trade..

#1

Post by NMABQAgave »

I'm looking for a few Agave Blue Glow Pups. Willing to trade any Pups (probably 5 different to offer) or Parryi seeds for them.

Willing to trade a larger New Mexico Agave that I had to separate from the mother plant. Only the two smaller plants are available. Soccer ball size 5 for reference. I will play shipping from your zip code and you'd pay for shipping from my Zip Code.

USA only..

I have a blue glow, but no pups yet. If/when it makes any I'll see if you're still looking and if we can work out a trade then.

Don't hold your breath, most do not offset at all.

Oh... Well, shoot. Thanks for the heads up.
I've been wanting to try coring, maybe I'll try on this one. It isn't as cold-tolerant as I like and it isn't the prettiest anymore because it just shot up some etiolated growth in the past month, so I'm not too attached to it.

Well I'll hold my breathe. I've read of plenty of Blue Glow Agaves that do produce Pups on Redit. And more than a few pictures of Blue Glow Agaves with Pups. So I look forward to trading with you when it pup. Got any other interesting Agave pup to trade?

Not really. I'm holding onto all my cold hardy ones. Then outside of those, the interesting ones (to me, at least) I only have one or two each, so not willing to trade those. Then that only leaves a few attenuatas, several vilmorinianas, a celsii multicolor, and a couple of small americanas. I have an atrovirens I probably shouldn't try to keep, but I I'm going to try to make it work. And have a couple variegated ones that aren't too big, but big enough that with those leaves that are so sprawling it would be annoying to ship.

This fall I've got nice Blue Glow under the name Zulu here in Finland from florist's shop. Amazingly as beautiful as hardy plant :U
It became so popular all over the world that's it's faster to get somewhere using net.

They’ve tissue cultured them extensively , which can trigger offsets, but some of the latest ‘blue glow’ I’ve seen for sale look mutated and stretched out. As Gee.S mentioned mine never produced offsets.

Funny you mention that because after seeing these I was wondering if maybe mine wasn't as etiolated as I thought.

Share some pics of your plant coring please... Before and after pics if possible. Is this similar to what Hidden Agave does to force agaves to produce Pups? Intesting as heck..

I don't know what hidden agave does, but quite possibly. Here is a post I made about it when I first learned about it: https://agaveville.org/viewtopic.php?p= ... ing#p73011

Before: you can see how long and stretched out the top leaves are compared to the bottom (and they seemed to have less color along the margins)

After: I hope I did it with a wide enough bit. Wasn't sure how wide to go. I cleaned up all the extra juice but don't have a photo of it after that. It isn't a huge plant. Hopefully it works.

I thought it was a failure, but I just noticed at least two on it today. There are two more leaves that I can't tell if they are part of the other pups or the start of their own pups. Hopefully more come, but at least it wasn't a failure and I didn't destroy it for nothing.

It is kind of hard to make out in the photo but here is where they are at now:

It’s still winter, temperatures are mild but you should notice more growth in the 70/80’s°F

Good to know, thanks! I brought it inside to the growing rack pretty shortly after I did it to Make sure it stayed dry. That probably stays around 68° in there most of the time. Once we warm up I will put it outside and hopefully that will help.

@NMABQAgave I just picked these up last night at Lowe’s on 12th street on the indoor Altman plant kiosk. Maybe try others around town?

I removed those two partial leaves to give a better view the new babies. The baby on the left is growing fast, while the baby on the right is growing slow.

I should probably make a new post for things like this, but just in case OP ever comes back he can see how the new plants are coming along and decide if he still wants to trade for one.

Anyways, I just moved these outside and was wondering what happens to the parent plant that I cored? Will it slowly die or will it make some kind of funky looking come back?

Ha, guess you got me there.

Okay so that leads to another question or two. Say I leave these pups, will they keep the same roots as the parents and be the "same" plant. Or will the parent rot and the pups grow new roots through the decaying parent plant?

And/or if I pull these pups, no new leaves will form? so it will eventually die from old leaves withering and no new leaves for new chlorophyll?

Your cored agave did not produce offsets, it generated new growth points. It just happens that most agaves aren't very good at generating new growth points (compared to yuccas, for example), so this is the best they can do. You can snap them off to start new plants or leave them, and they will take over the root system of your old plant. If you snap them off, your cored agave may try again, if it has enough left in the tank.

As an aside, not all agaves are monocarpic, and these polycarpic agaves are just the same -- after blooming they produce new growth points (axial branches), which you can leave or separate to start as new plants.
