This little sojourn was in the same general direction as those prior, but further north and toward a higher altitude, into full-on pine country in the shadow of the Mogollon Rim. This is where Agave chrysantha stops and Agave parryi starts, also where Yucca baccata stops and Yucca angustissima v. kanabensis starts. It is an absolutely magnificent part of the country, and there were some surprises along the way, including a couple of unexpected A. chrysantha incursions. This was a very different experience than exploring A. chrysantha habitat. The A. parryi population is more elusive, more scattered, and less inclined to bolt. Not only were fewer stalks standing, they were often hidden amongst the pine trees. We had to adjust our tactics in ferreting them out, but ferret them out we did.

OMG, Absolutely fantastic! You have done well, and all this within driving distance. Consider yourself blessed. This year is going to be be my 'Parryi Year, as I now have four truncatas, and lots of babies. Jkw

Beautiful pictures of one of my favorite Agaves. The first Agave I ever saw in habitat was in Oak Creek Canyon years ago. I looked up and there above me on the cliff was a large cluster of what I later learned was parryi; some were blooming. I was totally taken by the beauty. This scene put the urge to grow Agave into my mind. I guess you could say I was smitten.

Yeah, that would have been A. parryi v. couesii. They grow around Oak Creek, Prescott and Jerome. That's pretty far from my location, and I haven't made it there yet, though I am planning on doing so.
